Places to Visit

Strumble Head Lighthouse

The Lighthouse was first lit in January 1908, standing on a small island, known as Ynys Meicel (Michael’s Island). The lighthouse was electrified in 1965 and automated in 1980. It is now controlled from Essex, with one or two open days during the summer each year - see local press for dates and details for booking.

Bird-watching at Strumble Head

There is an identical building to Station A nearby to the Lighthouse at Strumble Head, which was called Station B. This was also a WWII high frequency radio wave research transmitter station, and has been modified by the National Park. It is now used as a bird and sea watching facility. It is regarded as the top sea watching site in Wales, with over 200 species recorded here. Details of the facility and some of the species are here .

Melin Tregwynt Woollen Mill

Nearby to Station A, at Castlemorris, is the working mill Melin Tregwynt, where you are able to watch the weavers working their machines, along with visiting the café and millshop.

Solva

Solva is a bustling little village, with bespoke local shops and places to eat, and a wonderful harbour where you can fish for crabs at high tide, or at low tide walk right out to the rock pools and caves around the corner.

Newport

The fantastically vast beach here is busy in the summer, with canoes and kayaking adding to the fun. Galleries, gift shops and restaurants fill the town with local pride.

Porthgain

A small coastal hamlet, once a small commercial harbour used for exporting stone from the nearby quarry, now a very popular tourist spot with pub, café, restaurant and excellent art galleries. Lovely coastal walks from here.

Beaches

Pwllcrochan:

This beach is nearby, but not the easiest to access.

Abermawr & Aberbach:

Abermawr and Aberbach are two neighbouring beaches, reached through woodland routes. Both beaches are backed by pebble banks, which carry the coastal path.

The rural setting of Abermawr beach made it an ideal landing point for Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s underwater telegraph cable from Wexford, Ireland in 1862.

A second cable was laid to Abermawr in 1880 and used until 1922, when storm damage to the cables saw the beach abandoned as a telegraph relay station.

Abereiddy

The grey slate and pebbles give a deep blue colour to the water in the quarry harbour, giving it the name the “Blue Lagoon”. Organised coasteering trips are often seen here snorkelling, diving and kayaking, along with fossil hunting on the beach. The "Blue Lagoon" played host to the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in 2013.

Newgale

Nearly two miles of beach, where kitesurfing and surfing tuition is available. There are three car parks behind the pebble bank. Walk to the end of the beach to go through the cave to more sheltered bays.

Whitesands, St Davids, SA62 6PS

Another fabulous, popular surfing beach (with lifeguards), rockpools, large car park, shop and café.
